ヴォーカリスト／ベーシストとして著名なボリス・ガーディナーは、60’sから70’sにかけて、カルロス・マルコムやバイロン・リーからスタジオ・ワン、アップセッターズ、アグロベーターズまで数々の重要なバンドに参加。バンドマスター、アレンジャーとしても大活躍した彼のキャリアの一例を挙げるとするなら「Nanny Goat」「Police & Thieves」「Heart Of Congos 」等。そんな彼が初めてリーダー録音としてクレジットされた45、BRONCOレーベルからの４曲2枚のシングルがRock A Shackaよりリリースされる。

ホーテンスのスタジオ・ワンのテイクも素晴らしかったが、これはボリスガーディナーとハックス・ブラウン、キース・スターリング等によるセッション。ダイナミックに歌い上げる前者に比べ、このテイクは抑制の効いた男の色気や哀愁を感じる。裏面、Bobby Socksとは少女用の短い靴下のこと。幼気(いたいけ)な少女が大人の女性へと、、これまた何ともSweetである。

ロイ・パントンのほろ苦くも美しいロックステディ。ホーン・レスでタイトなバンドの演奏の隙間を埋める甘いキーボードの調べ。針を落とし途端あたりに魔法がかかってしまうようなそんな曲。裏面はキラーという言葉では言い尽くせないアップ・テンポでマイナー・トーンの傑作。69年作。オリジナル・プレスは入手大困難。
During the 60s and 70s renowned vocalist/ bassist Boris Gardiner played with Carlos Malcolm, Byron Lee, the Upsetters and the Aggrovators, and recorded sessions at Studio One. Some of the highlights of his prolific career as a bandmaster and arranger include hits such as Nanny Goat, Police and Thieves and Heart of the Congos. This Rock A Shacka release is a mini-series of two 7 inch singles on the Bronco label on which Boris was credited as the lead artist and producer for the first time.

Hortense Ellis’ cut on Studio One is also wonderful, but this cut is second to none, featuring Boris Gardiner on vocals, backed by Hux Brown and Keith Starling among others. Boris’ restrained but heartfelt delivery is in stark contrast to Hortense’ dynamic interpretation.
On the flip is a tune which takes the short ‘Bobby Socks’ worn by young girls as its theme and which tells of the transition of a young girl to womanhood. This is another track which exemplifies Boris’ sweet vocal styles.

This is a haunting, beautiful Rock Steady number from Roy Panton. Listen out for the beautiful keyboard motif buried in the perfectly executed hornless backing rhythm. This tune is guaranteed to put you under a spell from the moment the needle drops. On the flip is a minor tone masterpiece from 1969 for which the term ‘killer’ is truly no exaggeration. The original press is near impossible to find.
