ECHO VIBRATION – DEXTER CAMPBELL @ CLUB STEREO

DEXTER “ECHO” CAMPBELL

The year is 1968 – the Rocksteady era – and the towns are in the grip of the rude boy movement. This was the year that Dexter Campbell first set up his Echo Vibration Sound System in Greenwich Farm. With the support of his breddrin who would gather at Bar Psychedelic Jack and with his natural selecting talent, soon it wasn’t just the residents of Greenwich Farm, but discerning residents across Kingston who were talking about Dexter’s sound. From the 70s through to the 80s he expanded his range of activities, hosting events and sessions with the likes of Ranking Trevor, General Echo, Nicodemus and Ringo. Audiences across the island continued to be mesmerized by the distinctive sound, soaked through with ghetto vibes. (Echo Vibration was the first sound system to set up at the Sun Splash festival which began in 1978.) During the 90s Dexter took a break from his sound system activities, but never lost his passion for selecting and continued to expand his activities worldwide. Aged over 70, but with a never-ending energy, to this day he continues to be an active and prolific selector.
